If we’re going to be technical about it, cubic zirconia is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. It’s a synthesised material which is often used in jewellery pieces and can provide a visual likeness to diamonds.
Cubic zirconia has been around since 1976 and has become very popular due to its brilliant shine. It is very durable and is almost as hard as diamond on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10, cubic zirconia is 8.5). However, unlike a diamond it is very affordable. It will often be cut in the same shapes as diamonds and is used in all kinds of jewellery pieces, most popularly rings and necklaces.
Cubic zirconia can come in a number of different colours, usually simulating the appearance of a real diamond. If you want to know whether you’re getting good value for money, ask about the carat weight. Since cubic zirconia can be made to a very high quality, this might start to push up the price. Be aware of this – whilst you want quality, don’t let yourself be overcharged as it’s not a real natural stone.
